Description

In the first semester of the phonetics and phonology LIDILE program students were exposed to the basic concepts of the segmental area of the subject. They applied them to the vowel inventory of the English language. The objective of this semester is to apply these basic concepts to the other essential part of the phonemic inventory of the English language: the consonantal system.

The objective of this course is thus to explore the phonetic description of consonants. Students are going to be exposed to sound discrimination and pronunciation exercises. Furthermore, students are going to be introduced to the symbolic representation of consonants as used by the International Phonetic Alphabet. This will enable them with the necessary tools to master narrow and broad transcription.

Objective

Students will describe physiologically the production of consonants.

Students will differentiate different allophonic expressions of complex consonants of the English language.

Students will transcribe short texts.
