Description
Phonetics and phonology are closely related core fields within linguistics, having both a common object of study, but a different perspective. While phonetics focuses the physical properties of the production, transmission and perception of speech sounds, phonology studies the functional representation and organization of these sounds within the grammar of human language. In this course we are going to concentrate on the phonetic description of speech sounds, which will be applied to the phonological organization of the English language.
Objective
Students will describe human speech sounds.
Students will recognize phonemes.
Students will transcribe English speech sounds.
Students will get acquainted with the concept of phonetic rules and analyze them in their speech.
Students will get acquainted with the basic terminology of the fields phonetics and phonology.
